Independent living is simply a home care arrangement designed exclusively for adults generally aged 60 years and above. Housing varies widely from bungalows to duplexes and to storey buildings even sometimes high rise buildings (or block of flats). In general, you may not find some of them friendly to aging adults. The more compact the house is, the better and easier he/she navigates within the house with minimum work to be done in the premises. While residents live independently, we don’t have most areas/communities offer amenities, activities and other social services as found in developed countries. Sometimes, recreational centers or churches are good places to connect with peers and participate in community activities such as playing of games, holiday gathering, movie nights, and under the tree relaxation mode. Since independence living facilities are aimed at older adults who need little or no assistance with daily living activities then only home support worker may be required. As with any change in living situation, it’s very important to plan ahead and give yourself room and space to cope with change. Such as planning to live downstairs at old age as aging may not allow ease of stairs climbing when it hits one.
